Drawing with Light

Catherine Anderson is one of my favorite artists. I was introduced to her by my best friend and creative encourager Tracy. This new year of 2014, Catherine Anderson is offering an on-line class full of inspiration that I wanted to blog about. Her classes are not merely ones that you take and move on to the next thing. Catherine makes you sit and contemplate who you are as an artist and what you want out of your life as a creative being. Her words really touched my heart and encouraged me for this upcoming new year. “ I want you to make time to take your camera on play dates. I want you to remember the joy you feel when you are in the process of creating an image. . . I want you to photograph simply for the happiness it gives you.” What joy photography gives me! Why don’t I do it more often? Why is it so hard for me to set aside time for my creative passion? It seems so easy to get into the route of life, taking care of family, kids, homework, cleaning, cooking…I seem to get lost in the shuffle. I am the only one who can set aside this time for myself. Why is it so hard? I try not to use it as an excuse, but being raised in the south we are taught to serve and to put others needs ahead our ourselves. After being diagnosed with an Auto Immune Disease, I can’t do that anymore. So, Life now is learning to adjust to changes, learning to be in tune to and listen to my body and not worrying about what others say or think. It is hard to make life changes. With CFS the two most important things I have learned is first, to take care of my physical needs of walking daily and resting and second feeding my spirit. Photography gives my spirit joy and makes me take quiet time to sit in God’s creation to look and listen.

“The word “photography” means “drawing with light”. We photographers communicate in the language of light.” Catherine Anderson. Webster defines photography as “ the art or process of producing images by the action of radiant energy and especially light.” This is new information for me and it is somewhat comical because I have always had God as my light, energy and inspiration, so when I discovered that photography means ‘drawing with light” I just had to smile. God uses all of our being to bring His light and love into the world. How is He going to use this? It will be fun to see.We will begin this creative journey this new year together.
